A
Character-Building Primer
“Character is what you are in the dark.”
– D. L. Moody
Good character is the fabric that holds a nation together; without
it, civilization, as we know it, would be lost. Character is simply
how we think, feel, and make decisions for right and wrong.
ABC’s of Character was created with the idea that a child's
formation of good character is as important as a child's formation
of a good, healthy body. Neglect in either area will produce devastating
results. When children have this book at an early age, they can
learn the essential character-building blocks of success. This book
was also created for adults to use as a reference or a reminder
of the simple, basic principles that constitute good character.
Children and adults alike will benefit from the treasury of values
found inside the pages of this book. The uniqueness of ABC's
of Character is that it was created for children of all ages
from the very young to the oldest adult. As Eleanor Roosevelt so
appropriately said, “Character building begins in our infancy, and
continues until death.”
The word character comes from the Greek, meaning to scrape, cut,
or engrave. It literally means a mark made by engraving or stamping
to make something distinct. So the combination of emotional, intellectual,
and moral qualities that people have, whether by habit or nature,
marks their real character, and distinguishes them from others.
Whatever has been stamped onto their lives leaves the mark of either
low character or good character. Recent studies have shown that
a person’s character is shaped at an earlier age than has been previously
believed. |

From Attentiveness to
Zeal, ABC’s of Character offers everyone the opportunity
to learn, study, and put into practice good character traits that
lead to a successful future. Everyone should have the opportunity
for success. This book can be used throughout their lives as a
reference book, a resource tool, and a reminder to continue building
good character. ABC’s of Character is also a valuable
keepsake that can be passed on to the next generation.
This book contains twenty-six character traits and definitions
along with twenty-six witty, illustrative poems highlighting the
traits. There are also twenty-six thought-provoking poems to reinforce
the definitions. Although some of the vocabulary may appear to
be a little challenging for a very young audience, it is never
too early to begin their character development. We recommend that
parents or leaders go through ABC’s of Character with
their children. Our goal is to provide a character-building primer
for the young and a reminder for the young at heart.
The habit of virtuous qualities stamped on children’s and adults’
hearts will help them make decisions for right and wrong the rest
of their lives.
“Character is simply habit long continued.”
– Plutarch
“Character is like a tree and reputation like its shadow.
The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing.”
– Abraham Lincoln
